Russian President Vladimir Putin spoke about US President Donald Trump's intention to buy Greenland at a meeting with permanent members of the Security Council and assessed its value using the example of Alaska.
Modern.az reports that, according to Putin, Russia is absolutely not interested in what is happening in Greenland.
At the same time, the Russian President recalled that Moscow has experience in resolving similar issues with Washington.
"In the 19th century, as we know, Russia sold Alaska to the United States, and the United States bought it from us. And if I remember correctly, the area of Alaska is approximately 1,717,000 square kilometers, a little more. The United States bought Alaska from us for 7.2 million dollars. Of course, these figures need to be confirmed, but I think this is approximately correct. At today's prices, taking into account inflation over all these decades, this figure would be 158 million dollars," Putin said.
According to him, the territory of Greenland is slightly larger:
"I think it is 2,166,000 square kilometers and a little more.
This is a difference of approximately 449,000-450,000 square kilometers. If we compare this with the cost of the US acquiring Alaska, the price of Greenland would be approximately 200-250 million dollars."
Putin said that compared to the gold prices of that period, this figure would be higher, probably close to 1 billion.
“But I think the US could afford this figure. Most importantly, Denmark and the US also have experience in this matter. Denmark sold the Virgin Islands in 1917, and the US bought them. So, they also have this experience.
By the way, Denmark has always treated Greenland as a colony and has been quite harsh, perhaps even cruel, towards it. But this is a completely different matter and is currently of no interest to anyone. I think they will resolve this issue among themselves," the Russian President stated.
