Armenia's second president Robert Kocharyan considered the current political situation in the country favorable for the formation of large electoral blocs. At a press conference held on January 29, Kocharyan stated that opposition forces could effectively utilize this opportunity.
Modern.az reports that this was noted in the writings of Armenian media.
According to Kocharyan, approximately 25 political forces participated in previous elections, but under current conditions, their number could decrease to 8-10. He believes that opposition forces could transform into 3-4 large blocs, which he thinks will reduce the dispersion of votes and facilitate a coordinated political struggle.
Speaking about the “Hayastan” bloc, Kocharyan stated that no final decision has been made yet, but there is a tendency to maintain the format of previous elections. He stated that opinion polls planned for early February would help identify the candidate who will lead the list. "If the polls show that I have garnered the most votes, I will lead the list; otherwise, a more effective candidate will be chosen," he emphasized, adding that the polls would be commissioned by a professional sociological company.
“In this situation, I would consider avoiding the struggle as desertion,” he said.
Kocharyan also noted that certain updates are planned for the list to attract new and active candidates. According to him, this step will allow him to take a stronger and more effective position in the upcoming elections compared to last year.
According to the ex-president, Armenia's current domestic political situation differs significantly from previous periods. In the country's history, during the pre-election phase, issues such as the perception of national symbols, the preservation of national identity, and the protection of church unity are at the center of public discussions. According to him, the discussion of fundamental issues by political forces at opposing poles is almost identical. In Kocharyan's opinion, this indicates the existence of broad opportunities for cooperation within the opposition. He emphasized that this situation creates additional optimism regarding the formation of large electoral alliances on the eve of the upcoming elections.
Parliamentary elections in Armenia will be held on June 7 this year.
