In Iran, amidst protests that occurred in January 2026, an attempt was made to remove Supreme Leader Seyyed Ali Khamenei from power.
Modern.az reports, citing "Le Figaro" newspaper, that the initiative was made on the night of January 8. Former President Hassan Rouhani put forward the proposal to transfer governance to a broader circle of officials in a crisis situation. However, the plan failed due to the lack of support from Ali Larijani, Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council.
Current President Masoud Pezeshkian is allegedly unaware of the discussions.
