Scientists from the University of Naples Federico II have developed an early warning system capable of predicting earthquakes 60 seconds in advance.

Modern.az reports that the researchers retrospectively tested the system based on data from the 7.8 and 7.6 magnitude earthquakes that occurred in Turkey on February 6, 2023. When an average intensity threshold was considered, the system could send warnings 10–60 seconds in advance to areas located 20–300 km from the epicenter, with a low false alarm rate. At a higher intensity threshold, warnings 20–40 seconds in advance were possible for areas further than 100 km.

Scientists obtained the data from 110 seismic stations managed by the Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency (AFAD). The results have been published in the journal Communications Earth & Environment.

It is reported that the system analyzes the initial signals of P-waves to predict the impact of destructive S-waves in advance. The researchers note that the selection of the warning threshold requires a technical balance between false and missed signals. (HaberGlobal)
