The European Parliament has supported new security guarantees for Ukraine and harsher restrictions against Russia.
Modern.az reports that, in the resolution dated February 24, 2026, the institution recognized Russia and Belarus as fully responsible parties for the war in Ukraine and called for the strengthening of sanctions. The document demands Russia to immediately cease military operations, withdraw its troops from Ukraine's internationally recognized territories, and release detained and deported persons, including children.
The European Parliament also reiterated that it does not recognize the Ukrainian territories occupied by the Russian Armed Forces as belonging to Russia.
The resolution emphasizes that a future peace agreement must be based on real and reliable security guarantees for Ukraine and must comply with international law. Deputies noted that Ukraine's future lies within the EU, and recommended accelerating the country's integration into the single market.
The document proposed further tightening of sanctions against Russia, especially restrictions in the energy sector, reducing dependence on Russian gas and oil, as well as recognizing the “Wagner” private military company as a terrorist organization.
The resolution was adopted with 437 votes in favor, 82 against, and 70 abstentions. (UNN)
