To strengthen the fight against unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) in Germany, the parliament has granted broader powers to the Armed Forces.

Modern.az reports that, according to the decision, the German Armed Forces (Bundeswehr) will now have the right to intercept, apply electronic countermeasures, or neutralize drones based on requests from civilian agencies.

The bill was adopted in the Bundestag with the support of the ruling Christian Democratic Union/Christian Social Union (CDU/CSU), the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD), and the opposition Alternative for Germany (AfD) party.

According to the amendments, the Ministry of Defense also gains the authority to independently initiate operations in urgent danger situations. The new law also stiffens penalties against those flying drones in airport airspace – these cases will now be considered criminal offenses and carry a prison sentence of up to two years. (Reuters)
