US President Donald Trump's claim that Iran would soon possess a missile capable of striking US territory has not been confirmed by intelligence.
Modern.az reports that three sources familiar with the matter informed the "Reuters" agency about this.
During his speech in Congress, Trump stated that Tehran is “soon working on missiles that can reach the US” and used this argument to justify possible military strikes. However, according to sources, a disclosed assessment by the US Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) in 2025 indicated that based on Iran's existing space launch vehicle technologies, the earliest it could develop a militarily effective intercontinental ballistic missile would be by 2035.
White House spokesperson Anna Kelly, however, stated that Trump's concerns were well-founded. Nevertheless, sources who wished to remain anonymous said they were unaware of any new intelligence indicating that Iran was developing a missile capable of reaching US territory in the near future.
US Secretary of State Marko Rubio, while saying that Iran could develop such weapons in the future, used more cautious language.
The Iranian side, however, declares that it has no intention of acquiring nuclear weapons. Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi stated that his country is not developing missiles with a range exceeding 2000 kilometers and that the program is defensive in nature.
The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and US intelligence state that Iran halted its nuclear weapons program in 2003. Alongside this, the agency notes that Iran has continued high-level uranium enrichment in recent years.
According to experts, although Iran possesses space launch vehicles, it still requires a long time to develop the technology that would protect a nuclear warhead upon re-entry into the atmosphere.
