Relations between Pakistan and Afghanistan have sharply escalated in recent days. According to statements from official Islamabad and Kabul, Pakistan carried out airstrikes in Afghan territory last night, targeting Taliban military posts and ammunition depots.

This step was reportedly taken after the Afghan side attacked Pakistani border forces. Pakistan's defense minister described the situation as an “open war.”

Modern.az recalls that although Pakistan supported the Taliban for many years, relations have not developed as expected since their return to power in 2021. Islamabad claims that the leadership and fighters of the “Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan” (TTP) group find refuge in Afghan territory and carry out attacks against Pakistan. Kabul, however, rejects these accusations and, on the contrary, accuses Pakistan of harboring ISIS fighters.

In recent months, clashes at the border and the closure of crossing points have severely impacted trade and movement. The Pakistani side states that a series of terrorist acts in the country since late 2024 are linked to Afghanistan. TTP has claimed responsibility for the recent attack in the Bajaur region, which resulted in the deaths of 11 security personnel and two civilians.

Analysts believe that Pakistan may expand its military operations. Although the Taliban's active personnel number approximately 172,000, the Pakistani army has over 600,000 active personnel and a strong air force. Pakistan possesses nuclear weapons.
