US President Donald Trump spoke by phone with Kurdish leaders in Iraq, discussing the ongoing war with Iran and possible future actions.
Modern.az reports that three sources familiar with these conversations told the “Axios” portal.
The Kurds have deployed thousands of soldiers along the Iran-Iraq border and control strategic areas that could be decisive as the war progresses. Iraqi Kurds also have close ties with Iran's Kurdish minority.
According to two sources, Trump spoke with the leaders of the two main Kurdish factions in Iraq – Masoud Barzani and Bafel Talabani – on Saturday, one day after the bombing campaign began.
A source familiar with the calls described them as "confidential" and declined to disclose details.
According to another source, the calls were the culmination of months of behind-the-scenes lobbying by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Israel has maintained close security, military, and intelligence ties with Kurds in Syria, Iraq, and Iran for decades. An official stated that "Netanyahu believes the Kurds will emerge from the shadows and rise up."
