US President Donald Trump has announced his intention to end the ongoing war with Iran as soon as possible. However, some high-ranking officials in the White House believe that the prolongation of the war would create political and economic risks, and therefore consider it necessary to develop a concrete plan for the withdrawal of US forces from the conflict.
Modern.az reports that "The Wall Street Journal" has published information on this matter.
According to the publication, Trump stated in a press conference in Florida that military operations have already yielded significant results. He noted that operations are well ahead of schedule and the war could end very soon. However, the US president did not announce a specific date for when the conflict would end.
According to the publication, some officials in the US administration believe that if Tehran continues its attacks on neighboring countries in the region and the fighting does not subside, it will be difficult for Washington to simply withdraw from the war. For this reason, they are urging Trump to publicly declare that military objectives have largely been achieved and to develop a politically secure exit strategy to cease the involvement of US forces.
One high-ranking official who spoke with the publication stated that Trump might not agree to cease hostilities without declaring a decisive victory under conditions of US military superiority.
The US president himself admitted that the situation is developing more complexly than previously expected. He expressed dissatisfaction with the appointment of Mojtaba Khamenei as Iran's new Supreme Leader and emphasized that this indicates Tehran's intention not to withdraw.
Trump stated in an interview that his goal is to create a system that leads to peace for many years. However, if such an agreement is not possible, the US president noted that it is important to end the war as soon as possible.
