Two diplomats from the Islamic Republic of Iran in Denmark and Australia have applied for asylum.
Modern.az reports that, according to information obtained by “Iran International”, Alireza Sokhbati, a diplomat at Iran's embassy in Copenhagen, and Mohammad Pournajaf, a diplomat working at the country's embassy in Canberra, have sought asylum.
According to the information, Pournajaf had previously also served as Chargé d'affaires ad interim at Iran's embassy in Australia.
Amidst the military-political tensions of recent months, other instances have also been recorded of Iranian diplomats leaving their posts and seeking asylum in foreign countries.
It should be noted that Alireza Jirani Hokm-Abad, a high-ranking Iranian diplomat working at the UN's European office in Geneva, left his workplace and applied for asylum in Switzerland. Furthermore, Gholamreza Derikvand, Chargé d'affaires ad interim at Iran's embassy in Austria, also sought asylum from Switzerland after leaving his post.
