The US struck Iran's military facilities on Kharg Island.
Modern.az reports that, according to US officials and Iranian state media, areas related to oil trade were not struck. However, Trump threatened that if Iran continues to stop ships from passing through the Strait of Hormuz, those areas would also be struck.
Despite its small size, Kharg Island is an economic lifeline for Iran and processes approximately 90% of the country's crude oil exports. Thus, any attack against the island carries a significant risk of escalation.
It should be noted that Kharg Island is located in the Persian Gulf, just 25 kilometers (15 miles) off the coast of Iran.
Almost daily, millions of barrels of crude oil flow via pipelines to the island from Iran's main fields, including Ahvaz, Marun, and Gachsaran. Due to strict military control, this island is known among Iranians as the "Forbidden Island."
CIA documents from 1984 exist regarding the island, which has long played a key role for the Iranian economy. The documents assess the facilities located on the island as the most important objects in Iran's oil system. It is stated that their continuous operation is vital for Iran's economic prosperity.
Israeli opposition leader Yair Lapid recently stated that the destruction of the terminal would cripple the Iranian economy and overthrow the regime.
