An accusation of insulting the religious feelings of citizens has been brought against Gamze Gökçe, a resident of Burdur province, Turkey, and she has been arrested by court order.
Modern.az reports that Gökçe, who calls herself a “writer,” shared a video on social media criticizing the holy month of Ramadan for Muslims, calling on people to refrain from prayer, and stating that fasting is “meaningless.”
Gamze's claim that the slaughter of animals during Eid al-Adha is a “needless ritual of murder” also drew criticism from social media users. She also insulted people who wrote angry comments regarding this post.
Gökçe's arrest warrant was issued on March 15, on the International Day to Combat Islamophobia.
Turkey's Minister of Justice Akın Gürlek made a relevant statement on Sunday. The Minister emphasized the unacceptability of attempts to sow discord in society, including on religious grounds, and condemned manifestations of Islamophobia.
