Against the backdrop of a potential war between the US and Israel against Iran, Iran's Qeshm Island has ceased to be a tourism and trade center, transforming into a frontline fortress and a key strategic target for US Marines.

Modern.az reports that Al Jazeera has disseminated this information.

It is reported that Qeshm, the largest island in the Gulf, has an area of 1.4 thousand square kilometers and is home to approximately 148 thousand people. The island is located just 22 kilometers from the port city of Bandar Abbas and provides a strategic advantage for access to the Strait of Hormuz by controlling the Clarence Strait.

According to analysts, Qeshm is one of the main platforms of Iran's “asymmetric” naval power strategy and effectively serves as an “unsinkable aircraft carrier”.

Lebanese retired Brigadier General Hassan Jouni stated in an interview with Al Jazeera that the underground complexes located on the island, known as “missile cities,” possess significant strike capabilities. According to him, the extensive network of underground tunnels and bases allows for effective control over the Strait of Hormuz and its closure if necessary.

According to reports, shipping through the strait has almost ceased. To date, only a small number of tankers have been permitted to pass. The administration of US President Donald Trump is attempting to form an international naval coalition to forcibly open the waterway. Other countries, meanwhile, are negotiating with Tehran to ensure safe transit for their vessels.
