24 schoolgirls have been abducted from a dormitory in northwestern Nigeria.
Modern.az reports that, according to the Associated Press agency, one of the girls managed to escape from the armed individuals and was rescued. This was stated by the school director of the school where the girls studied.
The girls were abducted early Monday morning as a result of an attack by armed individuals on the dormitory of the Government Girls Secondary School in Maiga, Kebbi State.
Local police reported that the armed individuals attacked the school premises, killing one of the guards.
No group has claimed responsibility for the abduction of the girls, but analysts and local residents say that gangs frequently target schools, travelers, and remote villagers for ransom.
Authorities claim that the bandits are primarily former herders who turned against farming communities after clashes over resource scarcity.
Mass abductions of schoolchildren are particularly widespread in northern Nigeria.
