Nearly 3 billion dollars will be attracted to renewable energy in Azerbaijan in the next two years.
Over the next two years, 10 solar and wind power plants are planned to be commissioned in Azerbaijan.
According to information, as a result of these projects, implemented with the participation of international financial organizations and having a total investment value of 2.7 billion US dollars, the share of renewable energy sources in overall energy production is intended to be increased.
By 2027, the share of renewable energy sources in Azerbaijan's installed energy capacity will reach 33.7 percent, 38 percent in 2030, and 42.5 percent in 2035.
Ecologist Rovshan Abbasov gave a statement to Modern.az regarding green energy and hydrogen prospects.
He noted that Azerbaijan has joined the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), the Kyoto Protocol, the Paris Agreement, as well as the Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy (Mayors' Agreement) initiative in the field of green energy and climate, and participates in international climate and energy initiatives within the framework of COP processes:
“The main goal of the green energy transition strategy is to accelerate the country's transition from traditional hydrocarbon resources to green energy sources. Significant investments are being made in this direction, and a part of them is provided by foreign investors. The President also emphasized that the creation of solar power plants in the country is one of the priorities.
Azerbaijan also keeps green hydrogen production in focus. Green hydrogen is produced through the electrolysis of water and is an energy source that can be stored for a long time. This holds strategic importance in terms of preserving the country's energy reserves and preventing the depletion of hydrocarbon resources.
By 2050, Azerbaijan's hydrocarbon reserves may significantly decrease or even be depleted, which is why the transition to green hydrogen is a priority.
The creation of infrastructure is one of the important issues in the implementation of renewable energy projects. Technological capabilities for solar panels and wind turbines are not yet fully formed, and investment in local infrastructure is necessary. Furthermore, during the implementation of projects, the protection of bird populations and migration routes must also be considered.
Azerbaijan has special potential for alternative energy production compared to European, Asian, and North African countries. Transporting energy from Africa would be significantly more expensive for European countries. Azerbaijan, however, is in a favorable position for this import.
While countries like China and India are launching green energy production projects, Azerbaijan is also striving to gain a strategic advantage in the energy sector. For this purpose, accelerating investments and fully commissioning projects are considered important".
Member of the Milli Majlis Azer Badamov, however, noted that an alternative energy resource will be formed through these projects. However, it is difficult to talk about a decrease in electricity prices for the population now. If the projects become more profitable, they may affect prices in the future. The current goal is environmental protection – the reduction of gas production.
