In the European Union, sales of electric vehicles surpassed sales of petrol-powered cars for the first time.
Modern.az reports that in December 2025, sales of fully electric vehicles in the European Union surpassed sales of petrol-powered cars for the first time (22.6% vs 22.5%), although hybrids still lead the market with a 44% market share.
The overall car market in the European Union and the United Kingdom has been growing for the 6th consecutive month. Sales of electric and hybrid vehicles continue to increase thanks to new models, government support, and consumer interest. Competition from Chinese brands (BYD, Geely, Changan) encourages European manufacturers to adapt. Total car sales in the EU increased by 5.8% in December and by 1.8% in 2025, although they remain below pre-pandemic levels.
