Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev has signed an Order on the celebration of the 120th anniversary of People's Poet Samad Vurgun.
According to information from Modern.az, the document states:
"In 2026, the 120th anniversary of Samad Vurgun (Samad Yusif oglu Vakilov), one of the powerful figures of 20th-century Azerbaijani literature, People's Poet, renowned playwright and public figure, laureate of USSR State Prizes, and full member of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences, will be celebrated.
Samad Vurgun is a prominent artist who initiated a new brilliant stage in the chronicle of Azerbaijani literary thought. The poet, whose multifaceted activity was centered on the ideal of Azerbaijanism, passionately glorified the Land of Fires, of which he was a minstrel. His poem "Azerbaijan," which has become a household name, is a poetic expression of the love for the homeland in the heart of every Azerbaijani. The great master of words fought tirelessly for the purity of his mother tongue, and by drawing from the inexhaustible treasury of folk creativity, he produced valuable works that reflected all the semantic beauties of this language and possessed deep humanistic and social content.
Samad Vurgun's unique lyrical poetry, with its romantic and philosophical content, which elevated national poetry to great heights, is included in the golden fund of Azerbaijani literature. Vurgun's dramaturgy, which instilled respect for the past and faith in the future, constitutes a special page in the history of Azerbaijani theater art. Samad Vurgun's artistic legacy, rich in innovative qualities, has strongly influenced modern Azerbaijani poetry as a school and continues to play a significant role in nurturing the younger generation in the spirit of loyalty to national and moral values.
Guided by paragraph 32 of Article 109 of the Constitution of the Republic of Azerbaijan, and with the aim of ensuring the celebration of the 120th anniversary of the prominent poet Samad Vurgun, who has rendered exceptional services to the development of Azerbaijani literature, I hereby decide".
In accordance with the Order, the Ministry of Culture, together with the National Academy of Sciences and relevant agencies, and taking into account the proposals of the Azerbaijan Writers' Union, must prepare and implement an action plan for the 120th anniversary of People's Poet Samad Vurgun.
