Turkey is one of those rare countries where it is sometimes possible to experience the signs of all four seasons in a single day.
According to Modern.az, the Black Sea region, stretching along the country's northern coasts, creates a particularly distinct atmosphere during the winter season: snow-covered forests, tranquil plateaus, and misty shores transform nature into a fairytale landscape. The region's inclusion in the “National Geographic – Best of the World 2026” list also confirms its tourism appeal.
Pristine white panoramas on the coasts of Ordu and Giresun, a cable car journey to Boztepe, relaxation around Ulugöl, and the Yason Burnu church in Perşembe, a Cittaslow (slow, high-quality, and human-centered life) designated town, are the first stops of a winter trip. Çambaşı Plateau and its ski center are ideal for active recreation enthusiasts, while Kümbet Plateau, Göksu travertines, and Kuzalan waterfall are perfect choices for nature lovers. The whistle language in Kuşköy, included in the UNESCO list, preserves the region's unique cultural heritage.
Trabzon appears particularly charming in winter: the Sümela Monastery amidst snow, the tranquil atmosphere of Uzungöl, and mountain plateaus create a classic winter landscape. Rural recreation and skiing opportunities around Hamsiköy and Zigana complete the journey. In Rize, Zil Castle, Şenyuva Bridge, and Ayder Plateau stand out with snowy panoramas, while Artvin offers a serene ecotourism experience with its Kaçkar and Kafkasör plateaus, the town of Şavşat, and the Camili Biosphere Reserve.
In the Western Black Sea, Bolu — with Lake Abant and Yedigöller National Park — is a primary destination for winter hikes and cottage retreats. Göynük and Mudurnu are notable for their thermal springs, while Safranbolu, both a UNESCO heritage site and a Cittaslow town, showcases the most beautiful examples of historical architecture under snow. The coasts of Amasra, İnceburun, Gerze, and Samsun are also locations that complete the route.
The regional cuisine, on the other hand, is very rich. Hot kuymak, black cabbage soup, pickles, and anchovies are the main flavors of winter. Akçaabat meatballs, Hamsiköy sütlaç, Samsun pide, and Safranbolu lokum enrich the culinary experience. Rize tea, throughout this journey, is the most delightful treat in the winter cold.
