İznik is one of Turkey's richest cities in terms of history and culture. Located in Bursa province, this ancient city attracts tourists with both its historical monuments and rich cultural heritage. Known as Nicaea in ancient times, the city was an important center for the Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman empires.

The city's history is very ancient

According to 2025 data, İznik's population is approximately 45,000, and a portion of the city's population is engaged in agriculture. In the same year, approximately 200,000 tourists visited the city. This increase accelerated particularly after the events held in connection with the 1700th anniversary of the First Council of Nicaea.
The city's history extends back to the 4th century BC. Initially founded by the Greeks, the city later became part of the Roman and Byzantine empires. During the Byzantine period, İznik was one of the Christian world's important religious centers, and the First Council of Nicaea was held here, where significant decisions in the history of Christianity were made.
Conquered by the Ottomans in the 14th century, İznik became one of the empire's important religious and cultural centers. The city became particularly famous for İznik tile art and was one of the main tile production centers for Ottoman palaces.


İznik's main historical sites

İznik city walls – This defense system, dating back to the Roman and Byzantine periods, is approximately 5 kilometers long. The İstanbul, Lefke, and Yenişehir gates located on the walls are of significant architectural importance.

The Hagia Sophia Mosque (Hagia Sophia Mosque) is a historical religious monument initially built as a Byzantine church and later converted into a mosque during the Ottoman period.

The Green Mosque, built in the 14th century, is known for its green and turquoise tile decorations and is one of the shining examples of İznik tile art.
The Nicaea Theatre has a capacity of approximately 15,000 spectators. This theatre was used for public events during the Roman period.
Lake İznik is one of the city's most prominent natural attractions. The remains of an ancient basilica discovered beneath the lake indicate that the region has an even older history.

Tourism and culinary arts


İznik is known not only for its history but also for its rich cuisine. Local culinary traditions are mainly associated with the Bursa region.
İznik köftesi is a traditional dish cooked over charcoal.
Olives and olive oil products are sourced from surrounding olive groves.
Lake fish, especially fried carp, are popular among tourists.
Homemade jams and rural products are widely sold in local markets.
