“Donald Trump is lying as usual, claiming that Denmark has "no written document" regarding Greenland and that everything is based solely on the fact that "a ship approached the shores of Greenland centuries ago".”
Modern.az reports that this was stated by the well-known Azerbaijani journalist İbrahim Nəbioğlu, who lives in Turkey.
According to the journalist, the US itself officially recognized Denmark's full sovereignty over all of Greenland in 1916.
“On August 4, 1916, when America purchased Denmark's Caribbean islands (now the Virgin Islands), US Secretary of State Robert Lansing signed a separate declaration, the original of which is preserved in Rigsarkivet – the Danish National Archives. The declaration stated:
"The Government of the United States of America will not object to the Danish Government extending its political and economic interests to all of Greenland."
The declaration helped Denmark officially claim all of Greenland as its territory in 1921, and in 1933, the Permanent Court of International Justice fully affirmed Denmark's sovereignty over the island.
The US President simply disregards history and international law to justify threats to seize the Arctic territory of Denmark, a NATO ally of the US. Trump, true to his habit, distorts the truth once again. This is an obvious blatant lie. In other words, the issue is not a “ship legend” but a matter of inter-state legal documents.
What Trump says stems not from ignorance of history, but from knowingly turning it into a tool for political manipulation,” İbrahim Nəbioğlu stated.
