Former President Joseph Kabila of the Democratic Republic of Congo has been accused of treason by a military court.

Modern.az reports that he has been sentenced to death. Le Figaro published this information.

The 54-year-old Kabila did not attend the court session and was not represented by a lawyer. The judges based their decision on his alleged assistance to the armed “March 23 Movement” (M23), which is supported by Rwanda.

According to reports, the former president's unexpected appearance in the country caused concern in the capital, Kinshasa. Political observers believe that this verdict is intended to prevent Kabila from uniting the opposition domestically. There is no information regarding his current whereabouts.

It should be recalled that Kabila, who led Congo from 2001 to 2019, was seen in Goma earlier this year after leaving the country in 2023. Until then, the M23 movement had launched large-scale attacks against the Congolese army, seizing significant territory along the border with Rwanda.

In May, the government revoked his immunity stemming from his status as a senator for life, and in July, the trial for treason began.
