The Norwegian Nobel Committee will announce the winner of this year's Nobel Peace Prize today at 12:00 Baku time.
However, this decision has dealt a blow to US President Donald Trump's long-held hopes of receiving the award. This is because the ceasefire agreement in Gaza announced by Trump took place one day after the Nobel Committee's final decision.
The five members of the Committee held their final meeting on Monday and made the final amendments to the statement explaining the reasons for the winner's selection. Historically, the decision is usually made a few days before that meeting.
According to Modern.az, Norwegian historian and Nobel expert Asle Svin told “AFP” agency that the Gaza agreement will not affect this year's award.
“The Nobel Committee has already made its decision. I am one hundred percent certain that Trump will not receive this year's award,” he said.
This year, 388 individuals and organizations have been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize. Although there is no clear favorite, various names are being discussed.
Among the nominees are the volunteer network called “Emergency Response Rooms” which helps people in famine and war conditions in Sudan, Yulia Navalnaya, the wife of Kremlin opponent Alexei Navalny, as well as the Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights, which observes elections in Europe.
Experts also do not rule out that the Nobel Committee may award this year's prize to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres or the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) or the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA).
Donald Trump answered journalists' questions about the Nobel Prize yesterday as follows: “I don't know what decision they will make. But I know one thing for sure: no one has stopped eight wars in nine months. I stopped them, and the biggest of them is the Gaza war.”
The winner of the Nobel Peace Prize will be announced today at a press conference in Oslo.
