The ideological pillars of totalitarian states leave no choice for their citizens. During its 70 years of existence, the USSR had become a captive of Lenin's communist ideas. Millions of people breathed the principles of Karl Marx's “Das Kapital” and were armed with Lenin's idea of “dictatorship of the proletariat”. Azerbaijan, as part of the Soviet empire, was no exception to this.

This photograph, presented by the Modern.az website in its “History of a Photo” section, was taken in the early 1980s.

Soviet Azerbaijan… Ramiz Mehdiyev, Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party for ideological issues, arrived from Baku to Kirovabad (now Ganja) – to the Institute of Technology. Fazail Aghamaliyev, head of the institute's department, introduces Ramiz Mehdiyev to the work of the social sciences cabinet on Marxism-Leninism that he organized…

The early days of Perestroika… A few years later, Fazail Aghamali would speak before millions of people in Azadlig Square and stand by Elchibey, who led the struggle for freedom, calling the state founded by Lenin an “empire”.

Ramiz Mehdiyev would later become the head of the Presidential Administration in the independent Republic of Azerbaijan.
