A closed-door meeting is being held at the White House between US President Donald Trump and Syrian President Ahmed Al-Shara.
According to Modern.az, this is the first official visit of a Syrian leader to Washington since Syria gained independence in 1946.
The two presidents are expected to discuss several issues, including the integration of Kurdish factions that still control a large part of Syria. Al-Shara will also ask Trump to lift sanctions against Syria. The US President, in turn, aims to add Syria to the group of countries that signed the Abraham Accords.
During the meeting, Syria's official accession to the US-led coalition fighting ISIS is expected to be discussed.
