US President Donald Trump made a statement to the press after his historic meeting with Syrian leader Ahmed al-Sharaa at the White House.
According to Modern.az, Trump announced that he would “do everything in his power for Syria's success.”
The meeting went down in history as the Syrian president's first visit to the US.
Trump called Sharaa a “strong leader”: “We will do everything for Syria's success. Everyone has had a difficult past, but now it is time to turn a new page.”
During the meeting, one of Sharaa's main goals was to ensure the full repeal of the “Caesar Sanctions Act” imposed by the US. Although the Ministry of Finance has currently suspended the implementation of this law for 180 days, a decision by Congress is required for its full repeal.
Sharaa, who fought in the ranks of “al-Qaeda” in the past and was held in a US prison for some time, came to power last year after overthrowing Bashar al-Assad. During his leadership, Syria began to move away from Iran and Russia, and started to restore relations with Turkey, Gulf countries, and the US.
The US administration is also mediating a security agreement between Syria and Israel. According to Western media reports, the US plans to deploy a limited contingent at a military base in Damascus.
Trump stated that the easing of sanctions is crucial for Syria's economic revival. According to World Bank estimates, the reconstruction of Syria after 14 years of war requires more than 200 billion dollars.
