In Kazakhstan, the nationwide competition to name the country's first nuclear power plant has concluded.
Modern.az reports, citing the Nuclear Energy Agency of the Republic of Kazakhstan, that based on the results of the final meeting of the Competition Commission, the name “Balkhash” («Балқаш») Nuclear Power Plant, which received the most suggestions from citizens, was chosen as the winner.
The chosen name also aligns with international practice regarding the naming of nuclear power plants based on geographical principles.
27,157 citizens of Kazakhstan aged 16 and above participated in the competition. Each participant could suggest only one name. When processing the information received from citizens, writing forms in Cyrillic and Latin scripts, as well as synonymous words, were also taken into account.
882 citizens suggested the name “Balkhash” Nuclear Power Plant, and this name became the winner of the competition by taking first place in the final popularity ranking.
The Competition Commission also determined the forms of the names in Russian and English:
— “Атомная электростанция «Балхаш»”;
— “Balkhash Nuclear Power Plant”.
