The UN Security Council adopted a resolution submitted by the US and supporting Donald Trump's 20-point peace plan for Gaza.
Modern.az reports that the resolution envisages a cessation of hostilities in the Gaza Strip, the establishment of a transitional governing p, and the deployment of an international stabilization force in the region.
The resolution was adopted following its submission by US Ambassador to the UN, Michael Waltz. Although Russia and China did not oppose the document, they expressed their dissatisfaction and abstained from the vote. Thus, the resolution was approved by the Council
According to the document, member states will be able to participate in a transitional administration called the “Peace Council” to be established under Trump's leadership. This p will oversee the reconstruction of Gaza, its economic recovery, and the formation of political governance.
At the same time, an international stabilization force is being established to implement the demilitarization process in Gaza, ensure the surrender of weapons, and dismantle military infrastructure.
Following the adoption of the resolution, HAMAS issued a statement rejecting the document. The movement stated that this creates an “international guardianship mechanism” over Gaza and emphasized that it would not lay down its arms.
Russian Ambassador Vasily Nebenzya stated after the vote that the resolution does not take into account the UN's role regarding the future of Gaza. China also took a similar stance, noting gaps in the document regarding the UN's role.
The Palestinian Authority welcomed the resolution and expressed its readiness to participate in its implementation. According to diplomats, Ramallah's support was one of the key factors that eliminated the possibility of a Russian veto.
US President Donald Trump shared a post on social media, calling the resolution a “historic event” and announcing that new appointments would be made in the coming days.
The document has caused a political scandal in Israel. The resolution includes the phrase “the maturation of conditions for opening a real path to Palestinian statehood.”
The text notes that if the Palestinian Authority implements a reform program and progress is made in the reconstruction of Gaza, negotiations towards the creation of a Palestinian state could be initiated.
Under pressure from right-wing parties in his government, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu issued a statement reiterating Israel's opposition to a Palestinian state and declaring that Gaza would be demilitarized.
“We will do this either the easy way or the hard way,” – Netanyahu said.
