The names of animals facing extinction in Azerbaijan have been announced.
Zoologist Elshad Asgarov provided information on this matter to Modern.az.
The expert stated that the most critically endangered species in the country are the striped hyena, the Pallas's cat, and the Caucasian leopard. According to him, the situation regarding the striped hyena and the Pallas's cat, in particular, is extremely concerning.
“Only 1-2 individuals of these species have been observed in the last 50 years,” he noted.
The zoologist emphasized that the Caucasian leopard is also under threat. He stated that the number of this rare predator in the country – mainly in the Hirkan forests, Zangezur mountains, and Karabakh plateau – is currently estimated to be less than 20 individuals.
Elshad Asgarov added that the aforementioned animal species have been included in Azerbaijan's "Red Book".
According to him, the main reason for the sharp decline in numbers is the shrinking of habitats due to human activity:
“The main factor is the appropriation of lands for agricultural purposes and the destruction of natural habitats”.
It should be recalled that individuals who hunt endangered animals listed in the "Red Book" are subject to a fine of 3000-6000 manats, correctional labor for up to 1 year, or imprisonment for up to 2 years, in accordance with Article 258.2.3 of the Criminal Code (illegal hunting, committed against animals whose hunting is completely prohibited).
