US President Donald Trump stated that regime change in Iran could be “the best thing that could happen”.

Modern.az reports that he made these remarks during his speech at Fort Bragg military base in North Carolina, accusing the Iranian leadership of conducting fruitless negotiations for many years and emphasizing that Washington would have “great power” in the region.

Trump's statements came against the backdrop of the Pentagon sending a second aircraft carrier to the Middle East. The “USS Gerald R. Ford”, the newest and largest US aircraft carrier, has already been dispatched to the region and will join the “Abraham Lincoln” aircraft carrier. According to US officials, it will take at least a week for the ship to reach the Middle East.

Although efforts to resume negotiations between Washington and Tehran regarding the nuclear program continue, Trump did not rule out the possibility of striking Iran if an agreement is not reached. According to him, the deployment of the second aircraft carrier to the region aims to “be ready if there is no agreement”.

According to information, US representatives Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner will hold talks with Iran in Geneva. Washington wants the nuclear issue to be discussed alongside the ballistic missile program and Iran's activities in the region. Tehran, however, has stated that it is only willing to discuss restrictions on its nuclear program in exchange for the lifting of sanctions.

The US had struck nuclear facilities in Iran last year. The deployment of additional military forces to the region, however, raises concerns about a possible large-scale confrontation.
