In recent months, the number of fake and distorted news reports against Azerbaijan has been increasing in some Turkish media outlets and social media accounts. These campaigns, particularly in media outlets controlled by Islamists, such as publications like “Yeni Akit”, are built upon Azerbaijan-Israel relations. Azerbaijan is allegedly accused of supporting Israel in the war, even though official Baku has consistently and openly declared its support for the “two-state solution”.
Despite numerous official statements and refutations by Azerbaijan, the dissemination of disinformation continues. Even fake photos circulated within the framework of the UN's 80th session are a clear example of this: it was claimed that the Azerbaijani delegation listened to and applauded Netanyahu's speech. However, UN discussions are openly broadcast live, and Azerbaijani media representatives have also covered the process on site. "Adding color" to an event that occurred in plain sight with fake photo montages only demonstrates the deliberate nature of the campaign.
Unfortunately, influential newspapers such as "Hürriyet" and "Sabah" have also joined this campaign. Although official Azerbaijani bodies have repeatedly refuted the fake news, some media outlets continue to spread falsehoods. Turkish officials have not yet refuted the information.
Modern.az contacted Şamil Ayrım, a deputy from the ruling Justice and Development Party in the Grand National Assembly of Turkey, regarding the issue.
He stated that these attempts, aimed at damaging the brotherhood between Turkey and Azerbaijan, which is based on solid foundations, will absolutely not achieve their goal:
“In recent days, critical opinions directed against our country and Azerbaijan are being disseminated to the public. These attempts, aimed at damaging the brotherhood between Turkey and Azerbaijan, which is based on solid foundations, will absolutely not achieve their goal. Our common history and traditions are the founders of Turkish-Azerbaijani brotherhood. This solidarity is not merely a legacy from the past, but is also strengthened by joint projects that will be passed on to future generations. Propaganda attempts far from the truth will not weaken this brotherhood. Azerbaijan and Turkey will continue to defend the truth and act together based on the concept of “Two states, one nation”.”
