In recent days, a certain increase has been observed in the number of small-magnitude seismic tremors recorded in the Caspian Sea.

Modern.az contacted  the General Director of the Republican Seismological Service Center, Qurban Yetirmişli, in connection with the issue.

He stated in his statement to our website that the Caspian Sea is considered one of the most seismically active zones in the territory of Azerbaijan:

“When tremors with a magnitude of 3 and above occur, this information is published in the media as official information. Weaker tremors, however, are frequently observed, and this situation is characteristic not only of the Caspian basin but also of other regions”,- he noted.

According to Qurban Yetirmişli, such small seismic tremors at the current stage do not create the probability of a strong and destructive earthquake:

“On the contrary, weak tremors serve for the gradual release of underground energy and indicate a tendency for tension to decrease. Regarding the situation across regions, currently, no special danger related to the risk of a destructive earthquake is observed in any area. The felt small tremors, however, are part of normal seismic processes and are not considered dangerous”,- the seismologist noted.
