In recent years, the consistent and targeted projects implemented by "Azerbaijan Railways" CJSC (ADY) have created a significant revival in passenger transportation across the country. Statistical indicators clearly show that interest in railway transport is increasing year by year. Thus, the number of passengers transported within the country by railway transport was 2.8 million in 2021, 5.2 million in 2022, 7.1 million in 2023, and 8.5 million in 2024. This dynamic is a real indicator of the increased comfort, safety, and quality of service provided for passengers.
In parallel with this, the expansion of the route network, the introduction of new routes, and the improvement of service quality have transformed the railway into a more attractive and convenient means of travel for citizens. As a result of these steps taken in intercity and suburban directions, ADY's trains are no longer just an alternative, but serve as the primary transport choice for many.
In a statement to Modern.az, transport expert Eldəniz Cəfərov stated that traveling by train has now become very efficient and attractive:
“For intercity travel, people prefer to use trains. This is because traveling by train has become more efficient now. For people covering long distances, train travel is more convenient. The extension of high-speed trains to long distances has made railways more attractive. The number of passengers using the railway is increasing year by year. In one of the interesting recent announcements, it was stated that railway stations would be opened between two more cities. I would very much like the railway line connecting the Southern region with Baku city to be put into operation soon. It is true that, according to my information, there are projects for freight trains to operate in the Lankaran-Astara direction. There used to be both passenger and freight railway lines. They simply needed reconstruction. I hope the Lankaran-Astara train will be put into operation soon."
E. Cəfərov cited comfortable trains and the expansion of the route network among the reasons for the increased passenger interest in railways.
"The interest of passengers in railways, I repeat, has increased. One of the main factors here is the change in the trains of "Azerbaijan Railways" CJSC. Last time I traveled to Aghdam by train. I was very satisfied with the use of the high-speed train. It was very comfortable, and the prices were reasonable. These projects should cover the entire country. Very good projects are being implemented. I cannot say anything negative here. Everything is evident. There is information about the opening of a new station between two cities. I think this will be announced by December 31st, or even on January 1st. There will be an opening of a new station. It is not yet clear between which cities it will be. The Aghdam-Khankendi station is planned for the end of next year. It will be possible to travel directly to Khankendi from Baku. But it might be completed sooner. I think there might be an opening of a line connecting two more tourist centers in the northern region. But we are waiting.”
