"The first person infected with HIV in Azerbaijan was detected in 1987. In total, from 1987 until the end of the second quarter of 2025, 11058 citizens of Azerbaijan are officially registered at the Republican AIDS Control Center of the Ministry of Health".
Modern.az reports that this was stated by Gunel Babayeva, head of the Monitoring and Evaluation Department of the Republican AIDS Control Center of the Ministry of Health.
It was reported that 70% of them are men and 30% are women:
"I would particularly like to emphasize that as a result of various targeted anti-epidemic and preventive measures implemented among high-risk groups for HIV infection, as well as the general population, Azerbaijan is among the countries with the lowest HIV prevalence rates in the Eastern Europe and Central Asia region. The fight against Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) holds an important place in our state's healthcare policy, and activities in this area are systematically carried out across several main directions.
Within the framework of the antiretroviral treatment program implemented in the country since 2006, currently more than ten thousand people living with HIV are under constant monitoring and treatment. Antiretroviral treatment applied to people living with HIV not only prevents the progression of the infection but also leads to a reduction in infectivity, as the viral load in people living with HIV who are on treatment decreases to an undetectable level in the blood, thereby minimizing the risk of HIV transmission from infected individuals to others".
