Immediately after the great victory achieved in the Patriotic War - starting from February 2021, the process of searching for grave sites attributed to missing persons, excavation, exhumation, and identification of discovered human remains has begun intensively in the liberated territories.
This was stated in the response given by the State Commission on Prisoners of War, Missing Persons, and Hostages to an inquiry from Modern.az.
It was noted that, according to information as of 01.01.2026, probable human remains belonging to 831 missing persons have been discovered and collected.
According to information as of 20.02.2026, as a result of forensic molecular-genetic examination of the discovered human remains, the identities of 220 persons missing in the First Karabakh War have been identified and disclosed to the public, handed over to their families, and buried in accordance with the requirements of legislation and national-religious traditions.
