The Prosecutor General's Office regarding the shelling of Nakhchivan opened a criminal case

A criminal case has been initiated in connection with a drone attack on civilian infrastructure in Nakhchivan.

Modern.az reports that the Press Service of the Prosecutor General's Office of Azerbaijan has released information on this matter.

On March 5, an attack was carried out against civilian infrastructure objects of the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic of the Republic of Azerbaijan by means of 2 unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) equipped with remotely controlled explosive warheads, launched from the territory of the Islamic Republic of Iran.

Preliminary investigative actions determined that one of the unmanned aerial vehicles fell on the terminal building of Nakhchivan International Airport, and the other near an educational institution located in Shakarabad village of Babek district.

As a result of the incident, significant damage was caused to the civilian infrastructure object, namely the administrative building and operations of Nakhchivan International Airport, and since the operations of airport services were deliberately and unlawfully disrupted, a civilian aircraft scheduled to operate flight number 264 on the Nakhchivan-Baku route was forced to return towards Baku city for safety purposes while airborne.

Furthermore, as a result of the incident, four civilians:

Employees serving at Nakhchivan Airport:
- Valiyeva Reyhana Sabir qizi, born in 1986,
- Zulfugarli Zulfugar Mammad oglu, born in 1996,
- Asgarov Mehdi Matlab oglu, born in 1996, and
- passenger Jafarov Asad Vidadi oglu, born in 1998, waiting to board the aircraft, sustained bodily injuries of varying degrees.

The injured persons were provided with appropriate medical assistance, and their treatment is currently ongoing under supervision in the hospital.

In connection with the incident, a criminal case was initiated by the Prosecutor General of the Republic of Azerbaijan under the relevant articles of the Criminal Code, and the preliminary investigation was entrusted to the Investigation Department of the Prosecutor General's Office.

Currently, employees of the prosecutor's office, together with relevant state bodies, have inspected the scene of the incident, material evidence has been collected, initial statements from injured persons and witnesses have been taken, and numerous investigative actions are being carried out, including the appointment of relevant expert examinations.

Furthermore, technical investigations are also being conducted regarding the origin and control route of the UAVs.

Within the framework of the preliminary investigation, all circumstances of this attack carried out against the territory of the Republic of Azerbaijan, contrary to the norms and principles of international law, will be objectively, fully, and comprehensively investigated, and the implementation of necessary measures to bring the perpetrators to justice in accordance with the procedure stipulated by law will be ensured.

The Prosecutor General's Office states that targeting civilian population and strategic infrastructure objects constitutes a gross violation of the fundamental principles of international humanitarian law.

Necessary investigative and operational measures regarding the criminal case are ongoing, and additional information will be provided to the public.
