Statistics on donkeys and mules by districts in Azerbaijan have been released.
According to information obtained by Modern.az from the State Statistical Committee, as of January 1, 2026, the number of registered donkeys in Azerbaijan is 10,311 donkeys and 38 mules.
Of the donkeys, 6,809 are 3 years old and above, which indicates their active use primarily in farms.
Looking at the indicators for the capital, there are 22 donkeys in Baku city (of which 8 are over 3 years old). All these animals are concentrated in Sabunchu district.
The situation is quite different across the regions. In the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic, there are 982 donkeys and 1 mule. Here, 10 donkeys are registered in Nakhchivan city, 191 donkeys in Babek district, 73 donkeys in Julfa district, and 224 donkeys in Kangarli district. Additionally, there are 57 donkeys and 1 mule in Ordubad district, 48 donkeys in Sadarak district, 171 donkeys in Shahbuz district, and 208 donkeys in Sharur district.
In the Absheron-Khizi economic region, the indicators are relatively low. 6 donkeys are registered in Absheron district, and 58 donkeys in Khizi district. There are no mules in this zone.
In the Mountainous Shirvan economic region, a total of 505 donkeys are kept. 57 donkeys are registered in Agsu district, 175 donkeys and 6 mules in Ismayilli district, 92 donkeys in Gobustan district, and 181 donkeys in Shamakhi district.
One of the highest indicators is observed in the Ganja-Dashkasan economic region. There are 1177 donkeys in this economic region. By districts, there are 5 in Naftalan city, 182 in Dashkasan district, 308 in Goranboy district, 199 in Goygol district, and 483 donkeys in Samukh.
In the Karabakh economic region, a total of 590 donkeys and 1 mule are registered. Looking at individual areas, the districts with the most donkeys are Aghdam, Fuzuli, and Barda. The number of donkeys in these districts is 152, 143, and 121, respectively. Additionally, 91 donkeys are in Tartar, 70 in Agjabadi, 11 in Aghdara, and 2 in Khojavand. Among these economic regions, only Khankendi city has no donkeys.
Among the highest indicators, the Gazakh-Tovuz economic region recorded 2094 donkeys and 2 mules. All mules are in Shamkir, which also has 475 donkeys. As for other regions, Gazakh has 585, Tovuz has 417, Agstafa has 405, and Gadabay has 212 donkeys.
In the Guba-Khachmaz economic region, a total of 1434 donkeys are registered. 778 are in Guba district, 284 in Khachmaz, 189 in Siyazan, 153 in Shabran, and 30 donkeys in Gusar.
The Lankaran-Astara economic region, located in the southern part of the country, also stands out with high indicators. There are 1862 donkeys and 8 mules here. Individually, Lerik has 627, Yardimli has 422, including 2 mules, Astara has 413, including 6 mules, Jalilabad has 337, Masalli has 39, and Lankaran has 24 donkeys.
In the Central Aran economic region, a total of 216 donkeys are registered. In this zone, the figures are 67 in Aghdash, 57 in Yevlakh, 46 in Kurdamir, 43 in Zardab, and 3 in Goychay.
In the Mil-Mughan economic region, there are a total of 289 donkeys. The distribution is as follows: Sabirabad (254), Saatli (18), Imishli (12), and Beylagan (5).
In the Sheki-Zagatala economic region, 492 donkeys and 13 mules are registered. Sheki has 263, including 1 mule, Oghuz has 134, including 12 mules, Gabala has 60, and Gakh has 35 donkeys.
In the Eastern Zangezur economic region, which covers the liberated territories, there are 70 donkeys and 2 mules. 54 are registered in Lachin, 12 in Jabrayil (including 2 mules), and 4 donkeys in Zangilan.
In the Shirvan-Salyan economic region, there are a total of 514 donkeys and 5 mules. Looking at the indicators by districts, 255 donkeys are in Hajigabul, 171 donkeys and 5 mules are registered in Neftchala. Of the donkeys allocated to this economic zone, 83 are in Salyan, and 5 are in Bilasuvar.
