At a time when discussions regarding the Zangezur corridor are intensifying, attention has turned to the Russian border guards located on the Armenia-Iran border. No regional player desires the presence of Russian military personnel in this area.
Russian border troops were deployed to protect Armenia's state borders as early as 1992. For many years, they have controlled the border line with Turkey and Iran. Particularly in the Zangezur region, the presence of Russian military personnel is considered a factor influencing both the security architecture and political balances.
For this very reason, while the issue of opening the Zangezur corridor is on the agenda, the question of the presence of Russian military personnel in the Zangezur region stands at the center of Armenia's internal security policy, as well as geopolitical discussions in Azerbaijan, Turkey, Iran, and the South Caucasus as a whole.
Deputy Rasim Musabayov commented on the topic to Modern.az.
He stated that there is no need to search for some abstract path here. The deputy emphasized that Russian military personnel should be withdrawn from the Zangezur region.
“Armenia's borders must be protected by the Armenian Border Troops, and this means that in the near future, Russian border guards should be removed from both the Turkish and Iranian borders. As for the passage of Azerbaijani citizens' cargo through the corridor, this should and will be resolved based on a special agreement,” Rasim Musabayov noted.
