A pre-trial detention measure of 4 months of house arrest has been chosen by the Sabail District Court against Ramiz Mehdiyev, former head of the Presidential Administration, former president of ANAS, academician.
R. Mehdiyev is accused under Articles 274 (Treason), 278 (Forcible seizure or forcible retention of power) and 193-1 (Legalization of criminally obtained funds) of the Criminal Code.
It should be noted that Ramiz Mehdiyev is also a member of the Veterans Council of the ruling New Azerbaijan Party (YAP).
The incident involving Ramiz Mehdiyev has caused a serious resonance in the country. Modern.az website has also learned the opinion of the members of the Milli Majlis on the matter,
YAP MP Aydın Mirzəzadə expressed regret that a person who had been entrusted with very high confidence allowed such incidents:
"The accusation was put forward by the SSS. The SSS has established itself in society as an institution that guards statehood and timely prevents threats to our statehood. If such accusations have been made, it means there are serious grounds, and this is the result of a long-term investigation and evidence. I deeply regret that such incidents have been allowed by a person who held a high position and was entrusted with great confidence. This shows that a person who has been entrusted with confidence must approach it responsibly. And any person entrusted with confidence must know that if they act illegally, if steps are taken that harm our state and independence, they will certainly be exposed and prevented. I believe in the invincibility of our state".
A. Mirzazade emphasized that everyone is equal before the law:
"The political course pursued by our President makes our country strong and truly independent. Any attempts by anyone to undermine this policy or lead Azerbaijan into an era of chaos will never succeed. The law is the law for everyone. Justice finds its place sooner or later. Yesterday's decision showed that there is no untouchable person in Azerbaijan. Everyone is accountable before the law. Serious conclusions must be drawn from this. No one should try to threaten the security and independence of our state. This is revealed sooner or later".
Another MP representing YAP in parliament, Elman Nasirov, believes that more details of the incident will emerge over the next 4 months:
"Yesterday, the Sabail District Court chose a pre-trial detention measure regarding Ramiz Mehdiyev's house arrest. And very serious accusations have been made. In particular, Article 274 of the Criminal Code is an extremely serious accusation, as it concerns treason. There is no crime more serious than this. Other articles also contain extremely serious crimes. Considering his probable age of 87, a decision for house arrest was made against him. During the investigation process, i.e., within 4 months, we will receive more information. Details regarding the accusations made will also likely be brought to the public's attention".
E. Nasirov emphasized that Ramiz Mehdiyev would be expelled from the party after being declared a criminal by the court's final decision:
"The position of the ruling party on these matters is clear. It is no longer possible for a person whose criminal act has been proven to remain in the party. There is a presumption of innocence. This or that person can be accused of any crimes. However, after that accusation is proven, and after the court's final decision is rendered - after being legally considered a criminal - he can be called a criminal. If the matters for which Ramiz Mehdiyev is accused are proven, the ruling party may review this issue and make an appropriate decision. This is not excluded".
