Protests in the Islamic Republic of Iran are gaining increasing momentum. It is currently reported that hundreds of people have been killed and thousands have been arrested.
The political tension in Iran has also negatively affected political and diplomatic relations with neighboring states. We tried to clarify the activity of the Milli Majlis's Azerbaijan-Iran Inter-Parliamentary Working Group in the context of recent tensions, the level of communication within the Working Group, as well as whether any planned meetings have taken place.
To clarify the issue, Modern.az contacted Aydın Mirzəzadə, a member of the Milli Majlis's Azerbaijan-Iran Inter-Parliamentary Working Group.
In a statement to our website, the parliamentarian stated that the working groups have not been in contact amidst the ongoing events:
“We have no contact during these periods. This is because Iranian authorities are preoccupied with internal processes. It is likely that inter-parliamentary relations can be discussed once the situation stabilizes or reaches a certain stage. As an Azerbaijani, and also as a member of the parliamentary friendship group, we are monitoring the processes taking place there. And our wish is that these issues will soon be resolved, and we will see stability and development in neighboring Iran.”
Milli Majlis In this matter, we wish them patience and, at the same time, a resolution of the issue in accordance with their national interests.”

The parliamentarian noted that the last meeting between the working groups took place on October 29, 2025, in connection with the “Constitution and Sovereignty Day”:
“Last autumn, a group of deputies led by the Speaker of the Iranian Parliament attended an international event held in the Milli Majlis regarding the “Constitution and Sovereignty Day”. Most of them were members of the friendship group. At the meeting, we had a broad discussion with the esteemed Speaker of the Milli Majlis, Ms. Sahiba, on our side, and the Speaker of the Iranian Parliament on the other side,” the deputy noted.
