Speaker of the Milli Majlis Sahiba Gafarova participated in the 2nd session of the Women Parliamentary Forum of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean, held in Abu Dhabi, within the framework of her business visit to the United Arab Emirates.

This was reported to Modern.az by the Press and Public Relations Department of the Milli Majlis.

Speaking at the opening ceremony of the session, Speaker Sahiba Gafarova noted that the Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean is a platform for dialogue, solidarity, and mutual understanding.

According to her, the special emphasis placed on gender equality and women's empowerment is a clear example of the Assembly's continuous commitment to collective action in order to achieve common goals.

Recalling that the Milli Majlis of Azerbaijan has officially applied for observer status in the Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean, Sahiba Gafarova expressed her belief that the support for this application will open new opportunities for closer cooperation and more effective joint activities. She also noted that we are interested in developing relations between the Parliamentary Network of the Non-Aligned Movement, which the Milli Majlis currently chairs, and the Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean.

The Speaker of the Milli Majlis recalled that the opening of the first secular school for girls in the Muslim world in Baku in 1901 and the granting of suffrage to women in 1918 reflect this approach and once again confirm the important role of women in Azerbaijani society.
