Strikes launched by the US and Israel on Iranian territory starting from February 28, 2026, have caused serious political tension in the country. During the attacks, Iran's supreme religious leader Ali Khamenei was killed, and a 40-day mourning period was declared in the country.
Following the events, the Iranian parliament (Majlis) initiated emergency discussions and held meetings regarding security and the country's future political course. Deputies strongly condemned the attacks by the US and Israel, bringing the discussion of military and political response measures in the region to the agenda.
Whether there has been any contact between Iranian and Azerbaijani parliamentarians amidst the current situation is also one of the issues attracting attention.
In a statement to Modern.az regarding the issue, Aydın Mirzəzadə, a member of the Azerbaijan-Iran inter-parliamentary relations working group, stated that there has been no recent contact with members of the Iranian parliament's friendship group with Azerbaijan.
He noted that inter-parliamentary relations are an issue that seriously affects the situation of both states:
"These relations may be possible after the processes in Iran conclude and stability is established. Although we do not have direct contact, we are closely monitoring the ongoing processes in Iran as representatives of a friendly and brotherly country. We advocate for the swift establishment of peace there. We would very much wish that these events had not occurred and that problems between Iran and the Western world would have found their resolution through negotiations, based on international legal norms, and consequently, nations would have continued their relations in a peaceful coexistence."
