The heroic pages of Azerbaijani history have always been written with the blood of martyrs and the bravery of heroes. However, it is not only their valor that etches the names of these heroes into history, but also the high value the state places on these individuals. In this regard, the titles “National Hero of Azerbaijan” and “Hero of the Patriotic War” hold special significance from moral, historical, and ideological perspectives.

On the 5th anniversary of Victory Day, celebrated by the Azerbaijani people these days, the heroes bearing the honorary titles “Hero of the Patriotic War” and “National Hero of Azerbaijan” are also in the spotlight.

Both of these titles are an expression of the same spirit – love for the homeland, self-sacrifice, and honor. The heroes deemed worthy of them had the same goal: to protect the integrity and honor of Azerbaijan.

The title “National Hero of Azerbaijan” was established on March 25, 1992.

The title “Hero of the Patriotic War” was established on November 20, 2020.

So, which of these titles represents a higher degree of distinction?

Modern.az
website, taking into account discussions on social networks and in society, has attempted to clarify the above question.

The title “Hero of the Patriotic War” was established in connection with the victory in the Second Karabakh War. This honorary title is Azerbaijan's highest degree of distinction.

The special insignia of the title “Hero of the Patriotic War” is the “Hero of the Patriotic War” medal.

The title “Hero of the Patriotic War” is awarded for highly professional leadership in combat missions aimed at the complete defeat of enemy forces during the liberation of the occupied territories of the Republic of Azerbaijan and in combat operations for the restoration of the state border, as well as for personal heroism displayed in combat operations.
The title “Hero of the Patriotic War” is awarded to the same person only once.

Persons who have received the title “Hero of the Patriotic War” benefit from privileges established by law.

At least 83 people have been awarded the title "Hero of the Patriotic War". Of the servicemen awarded the title “Hero of the Patriotic War”, 34 were martyred in battles, and 49 are alive.

Persons who have received the title “Hero of the Patriotic War” are granted a Presidential scholarship. The amount of this scholarship is 2200 manats.

The title “National Hero of Azerbaijan” is the republic's second highest degree of distinction. This honorary title is awarded for exceptional services and valor rendered to the people for the independence and progress of the Republic of Azerbaijan.
The special insignia of the title “National Hero of Azerbaijan” is the eight-pointed “Gold Star” medal.
The title “National Hero of Azerbaijan” is awarded to the same person only once.
The National Hero of Azerbaijan benefits from privileges established by legislation.

Currently, the number of National Heroes of Azerbaijan is 224 people. Of these, 15 are alive, while the rest have either been martyred or have passed away later.

Persons who have received the title “National Hero of Azerbaijan” are also granted a Presidential scholarship. The amount of this scholarship is 2000 manats.

Thus, according to legislation, the title “Hero of the Patriotic War” is one rank higher than the title “National Hero of Azerbaijan”.

The “Hero of the Patriotic War” medal is worn on the left side of the chest, above other orders and medals.
Below it, the “Gold Star” of the “National Hero of Azerbaijan” is worn.

Below the “Gold Star”, the "For the Homeland" medal is worn.

The concept of heroism transcends time. It is measured neither by a title nor by a medal. However, these titles – “National Hero” and “Hero of the Patriotic War” – keep alive the memory of the people, national pride, and values passed on to future generations.

There is also a historical sequence between these two titles. The “National Heroes” laid the moral foundation of the independent Azerbaijani army, while the “Heroes of the Patriotic War” demonstrated the power of that army to the world.
Thus, one became the symbol of the beginning, the other of victory.
