Early 1990s... The Soviet leadership had committed a bloody tragedy in Baku in January... One of the most turbulent periods in Azerbaijani history was being experienced. The country was in a state of political crisis, territorial loss, public unrest, and great anxiety about the future.
As a sign of protest against the two-faced policy of the USSR leadership regarding the acute conflict situation that had arisen in Karabakh, Azerbaijan's national leader Heydar Aliyev left the ranks of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union in July 1990 and came to Baku...
When Heydar Aliyev returned to Baku, many knew that this arrival could be the beginning of something. However, no one could yet predict the subsequent course of events...
During those difficult times, he stayed at his brother Jalal Aliyev's house in Baku. At that time, facing threats, H. Aliyev was forced to go to Nakhchivan. After going to Nakhchivan, Heydar Aliyev was elected People's Deputy of the Azerbaijan SSR and People's Deputy of the Nakhchivan ASSR. Therefore, as a deputy, he had to come to Baku from Nakhchivan at times to participate in the sessions of the Supreme Soviet of the Azerbaijan SSR.
This photo, presented by the Modern.az website in its "History of a Photo" section, was also taken during that period.
Time: February 1991... Location: Academician Jalal Aliyev's house...
The photo was provided by former consul Kheyreddin Goja, one of the "91s" who played an important role in Heydar Aliyev's return to power.
In addition to Heydar Aliyev, the photo also features his brother Jalal Aliyev, Kheyreddin Goja himself, and Beyler Eyyubov, who later headed the president's security service.
Kheyreddin Goja stated that the other individuals were friends and relatives of the Aliyevs.
Heydar Aliyev was elected chairman at an extraordinary session held in the Supreme Assembly of the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic on September 3, 1991.
On June 15, 1993, he returned to Baku and assumed leadership of the political power.
