“A word base should be formed for schools. The minimum level of vocabulary for each age category should be determined. For example, how many words should be mastered by children aged 3-6?”.
Modern.az reports that this was stated by Mehriban Vəliyeva, a member of the Science and Education Committee of the Milli Majlis, at an event titled “Public Discussion: School Diary,” which is part of the project “School in Public Discussion,” implemented with the support of the Baku City Education Department (BŞTİ) and the Azerbaijan Press Council.
According to the MP, this issue already exists in world practice.
“For example, in Great Britain, students complete their education from preschool to university with a vocabulary of approximately 71,000 words. In Japan, this figure is approximately 42,000 words, while in Turkey, it was once 10-15,000, and is now at the level of 25,000 words. Although these indicators change over time, a general approach exists. However, in our country, a comprehensive approach to this issue has not yet been fully formed.”
The MP noted that it should be clarified which words children should learn by certain age stages.
“What should be the frequency of use of these words? Which part of them should be included in passive vocabulary, and which part in active vocabulary? These issues should be determined not only through a theoretical approach but also based on scientific research.”
M. Vəliyeva also added that objective research should be conducted in this direction, results should be prepared, and schools should operate based on that foundation.
“Textbooks should also be prepared and developed precisely on this basis. The development of the Azerbaijani language should also start from this direction,” the MP concluded.
