The Azerbaijani embassy located in Kyiv, the capital of Ukraine, has once again become the target of a Russian attack.
During an attack on the city in the late hours of November 14, one of the “Iskander” type missiles fell on the territory of our embassy. The explosion destroyed the fence of the diplomatic mission, and the administrative building, consular department, and service vehicles suffered serious damage. Fortunately, the incident did not result in casualties.
Russia's Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Azerbaijan, Mikhail Evdokimov, was summoned to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan and presented with a note.
In a statement to Modern.az, Elshad Musayev, a member of the Milli Majlis Azerbaijan-Russia inter-parliamentary working group, stated that the targeting of our embassy was not accidental:
“Russia's aggression against Ukraine continues. Russia's statehood philosophy is built upon imperial and expansionist ambitions. Now, it is brutally carrying out massacres in Ukraine, destroying people, and simultaneously threatening the entire world. It also uses such brutal methods to keep the South Caucasus countries under its influence. I do not believe that the missile fragments accidentally hit the Azerbaijani embassy. Looking at Russia's policy towards Azerbaijan in recent times, it appears that this country has certain desires. Russia does not want to let the South Caucasus out of its influence. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has issued a note to Russia. Both the political establishment and the intellectual community of the country should protest against Russia. Unfortunately, there are still certain segments that are under Russia's influence. Russia is able to act freely here because of this.”
E. Musayev does not expect any civilized steps from Russia regarding the incident:
"Russia bears responsibility for the targeting of our embassy building. However, currently, it is international power, not international law, that is at play. From that perspective, Russia openly interferes in the territory of another country before the eyes of the world. Russia is an imperial, hegemonic power. In the current period, it would be naive to expect any compensation from Russia regarding the Azerbaijani embassy. The Azerbaijani side, of course, should voice this and demand it. But I do not expect practical steps from Russia, an authoritarian state."
However, another member of the Milli Majlis Azerbaijan-Russia inter-parliamentary working group, Azer Badamov, does not believe that Russia deliberately targeted our embassy:
“A war is ongoing between Ukraine and Russia. Both countries are carrying out mutual missile attacks. Due to the imprecise coordinates of the attacks, it is possible that missiles fell near our embassy building, resulting in fragments hitting the embassy building. In any case, when such shelling occurs, certain precautionary measures should be taken to prevent damage to diplomatic missions.
I do not consider it correct to politicize this issue. Such incidents can occur in war-torn areas.”
