The US is not investing 9 billion dollars and Armenia will purchase equipment for the Nuclear Power Plant using state debt.

Modern.az reports that this was stated by Narek Karapetyan, coordinator of the opposition “Our Way” movement. He stated that Vice President J.D. Vance's remarks regarding cooperation in the field of nuclear energy during his visit to Armenia were mistranslated and, for this reason, presented as an investment project for Armenia.

"The original text referred to the possible supply of US-made equipment worth 5 billion dollars, and an additional 4 billion dollars within the framework of long-term contracts for fuel supply and technical maintenance. This does not constitute a direct investment in the Armenian economy".

In the translation, this was presented as mutually beneficial investments, which, according to Karapetyan, was done intentionally.

"The modular-type NPP will be built not through US investments, but through state debt, and this will lead to a twofold increase in nuclear power tariffs".

Furthermore, he noted that cheaper and more powerful alternative proposals, including from China, were available but were not considered.
