The month of Ramadan has started in Azerbaijan today. As in other Muslim countries, there are those who fast and those who do not fast in Azerbaijan. Among those who fast, there are also those who perform prayers as well as those who do not.
Can a person who does not perform prayers fast?
According to Modern.az, Ceyhun Mammadov, a member of the Milli Majlis Committee on Public Associations and Religious Organizations, and a Doctor of Philosophy in Theology, answered the question as follows:
“From time to time, one of the most discussed and questioned topics in the Islamic world, especially in Azerbaijan, is related to a person who does not perform prayers observing the fast.
Unfortunately, as a society, we tend to scrutinize the actions of others more than our own.
Undoubtedly, Islam has recommended Muslims to perform all acts of worship. From this perspective, it is more appropriate for a person who fasts to perform other acts of worship in addition to prayers. Because in our religion, performing both acts of worship is obligatory.
However, since prayer and fasting are separate acts of worship, there is nothing wrong with a person who does not perform prayers observing the fast. Let us also not forget that perhaps the person who fasts this year may also start performing prayers in the coming days.
Therefore, let us scrutinize our own actions rather than those of others. In the afterlife, we will be questioned about our own deeds, not those of others.”
