In recent years, the issue of security in educational institutions worldwide is increasingly becoming a serious topic of discussion. Armed incidents, especially those occurring in secondary schools and high schools, cause serious concern in societies. Last year, 2025, was no exception in this regard. According to international monitoring and media reports, at least 15-20 armed incidents were recorded in secondary schools and high schools globally in 2025. Although this figure has relatively decreased compared to previous years, the fact that these incidents result in deaths and serious injuries does not change the scale of the threat. Experts believe that among the main causes of armed incidents are: illegal arms trafficking, psychological problems, weak security control in schools, and social and family conflicts.

Tragic Incidents in Europe
In February of last year, an armed incident occurred at the Campus Risbergska educational institution located in Örebro, Sweden. As a result of the incident, 10 people lost their lives and 6 people were injured. It should be noted that this educational center operates in a structure close to the secondary education level.
Another such incident occurred in June 2025 at the “Dreierschützengasse” high school located in Graz, Austria. The armed attack at the high school was recorded as one of the bloodiest school incidents in Europe in recent years. As a result of the attack perpetrated by a former student, 10 people died and more than 10 individuals were injured. The assailant committed suicide after the incident.
The USA is once again at the forefront
In the USA, armed incidents in schools continued in 2025. In January, a shooting by a student at Antioch High School in Tennessee resulted in 1 student dead and 1 injured. In September, two students were seriously injured in an armed attack at Evergreen High School in Colorado. The vast majority of school shootings in the USA are perpetrated by students belonging to the secondary school and high school age group, which makes the issue even more dangerous.
Incidentally, in the USA, a global superpower, approximately 417 armed shooting incidents have been recorded in schools since 1999.
Approximately 203 people were killed in these shootings, and there were also many location-related injuries.
Azerbaijan
Today, an armed incident occurred at the “Idrak” high school located in Baku. During the incident, a 10th-grade student of the high school fired a hunting rifle at his teacher. As a result of the shooting, a 29-year-old female teacher was injured. It should be noted that this is the only such incident that has occurred in Azerbaijan. Moreover, no fatalities were recorded in this incident.
This indicates that security in Azerbaijan, as in all other sectors, is organized at a high level in the field of education. Because, overall, the security environment in Azerbaijan is structured in such a way that such incidents are rarely encountered.
