The visit of James David Vance, Vice President of the United States, to the South Caucasus begins. He will be in Yerevan today. Tomorrow, he will arrive in Azerbaijan.
The diplomatic implications of Vance's visit for Azerbaijan and the topics to be discussed are noteworthy nuances.
In a statement to Modern.az, former Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov stated that Vance's visit to Azerbaijan promises development in relations:
"Of course, such a high-level visit promises progress. Azerbaijan-US relations will develop further. This is important. The last time, in 2008, George Bush's Vice President Dick Cheney visited our country. However, during his visit, security issues and, most importantly, the Afghanistan issue were on the table".
E. Mammadyarov also spoke about the issues to be discussed with Azerbaijan:
"Most likely, issues related to energy, transport, including the Zangezur corridor, will be discussed again. Additionally, there is the Iran issue, and they will discuss the situation in the Middle East. It is expected that the US Vice President will also touch upon the Russia issue. They are considering how to resolve the Ukraine issue. Because peace in Ukraine is not expected soon. There might be a ceasefire, but I do not believe there will be a final peace. The parties will address economic, political, and security issues. However, I believe that when high-level officials visit a country, the dynamics and development in relations increase".
